BiographyHistory

Daphne Banyawarra is a storyteller, writer, artist and teacher from a well known and respected family of high achievers. Born in Yurrwi, also known as Milingimbi Island in north-central Arnhem Land, Banyawarra is the daughter of Andrew Marrakaywara and Trudy Mapunhdarr. Her father is remembered as a highly respected warrior belonging to the Djinba language group and the Ganalbingu people. Banyawarra's father Andrew Marrakaywara is noted for having successfully defended his lands from the encroachment of pastoralists. Banyawarra's family name is Malibirr and she belongs to the Bulanydjan skin group.
