Arthur Murray grew up in Brewarrina and attended school in Lightning Ridge. Arthur is the husband of Leila Murray and the father of Eddie Murray (qq.v.) who died in suspicious circumstances in a police cell in the northern New South Wales town of Wee Waa in 1981. Arthur and Leila Murray, embarked on a search for truth and fought for over twenty years to have the death of their son properly investigated.
According to the Koori Mail, Arthur had 'made a passionate, productive and significant contribution to Aboriginal rights in Australia'. He had successfully campaigned to improve the living and employment conditions at Tulladunne and Wee Waa, New South Wales. In the 1960s, Arthur was involved in the Freedom Riders in Morree, which highlighted the inequality faced by Aboriginal people at that time. In his later years, Arthur continued to contribute to the Collarenebri community where he lived and worked on local properties. (Source: Koori Mail, issue 536 2012).
