Patrick Grant became the editor, printer and publisher of the Sydney Gazette with the issue of 28 October 1841. In a farewell editorial on 26 October 1841 the previous editor describes Grant as a British journalist who has had 'an intimate connection with the metropolitan press in London, as the proprietor and editor of a journal'; Grant had owned and edited the radical London paper The Sun. The Gazette ceased publication after 16 July 1842, and was purchased by Richard Sanderson, who recommenced publication on 2 August.

A letter in the Gazette of 4 August by former compositors of the Gazette claims that Grant had not paid them for some time; Patrick Grant is listed as an insolvent in the paper later that month.

Patrick Grant was for a period a police magistrate at Maitland, New South Wales. He was a Member of the first Legislative Council of New South Wales 1845 - 1848 and the proprietor of a number of other New South Wales newspapers. He was editor, printer and publisher of the short-lived newspaper, The Bee of Australia.
