Notes

  • Nathaniel Lipscomb Kentish, editor of the Sydney Times, offers faint praise to the author Edesia in his newspaper (Aug.26, 1834, p.2): 'The several accomplished writers who kindly favour "The Times" with their preference, we trust unite too large a share of good nature with their cultivated talents, to object to our giving place to feminine and occasionally inferior productions. We do so to encourage the votaries of the muses. The naivete mainifested by the very handwriting, as well as mode of expression of the note enclosing the lines of the fair "Edesia" would render it impossible for our gallantry to reject her numbers, though less exquisitely turned than her ankle'.
