Pearl McKenzie, an Adnyamathanha woman, was born in a creek bed, sometime in 1922 at Burr Well Station, South Australia, the daughter of Henry and May Wilton. She was the second of nine children, three boys and six girls. Pearl lived a traditional life, despite the increasing influence of the European ways. She was the wife of the late John McKenzie (q.v) they had five children. Soon after the birth of their first child, they moved to Martin's Well Station, where John became head stockman.
