Amalgamated Pictures was established as a film production and distribution company in early 1911 through a partnership between theatrical managers and entrepreneurs J. and N. Tait, and chemists Millard Johnson and William Gibson. Johnson and Gibson, who had turned to exhibition and production after acquiring a film projector from a vaudeville show, had previously been involved in the Tait's films The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and It's Never Too Late to Mend (1911). Following the success of the latter film the four men amalgamated their interests and began producing newsreels, along with several feature films (including The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, 1911). The company merged with Australasian Films in late 1912.
