G.R. Maclean, according to an inscription in the front matter of a copy of The Sydney Magazine presented to the Highland Society of New South Wales, was a member of that society. The same handwritten inscription refers to The Sydney Magazine containing 'a new version (in heroic English rhyme) of the divine epic poem of "Fingal", by Ossian, "the old bard of Caledonia".'
