'The First World War marked the emergence of the Dominions on the world stage as independent nations, none more so than Australia. The country's sacrifice at Gallipoli in 1915, and the splendid combat record of Australian troops on the Western Front not only created a national awakening at home, but also put Great Britain in their debt, ensuring them greater influence at the Peace Conferences.

'Australia was represented at Versailles by the Prime Minister, the colourful Billy Hughes, whom Woodrow Wilson called "a pestiferous varmint" after their repeated clashes over Australia's claims to the Pacific Islands its troops had taken from Germany during the War. Hughes was also the most vociferous (though by no means at all the only) opponent of the racial equality clause put forward by Japan. Indeed, it was fear of Japanese expansion that drove Australia's territorial demands in the Pacific.' (From the publisher's website.)

'Much is known about British migration to Australia and something is known of British communities in Australia, but knowledge, particularly quantitative, of the reverse process is very sketchy. The phenomenon has been acknowledged but little explored. There are a number of important studies of significant Australians in the UK, and there has been recent research on the current Australian diaspora, but there is no study of the overall Australian presence, its constituents or its characteristics. Developments in this field of research offer an important window on how Australians related to the 'British world' historically and on the dynamism of the contemporary relationship. Australians in Britain is an edited collection of papers of international research on the character and experience of overseas Australians and Australian communities in Britain since c.1901. It offers a comprehensive overview of current scholarship in this exciting, new and developing field of inquiry. This book has a contemporary focus, drawing on both recent and historical experiences with a view to understanding continuing trends, such as the consistent preponderance of women and the recent surge in young professionals, and issues such as expatriatism, imperialism, globalisation, national identity and overseas citizenship. This book will appeal to scholars of Australian Studies (within Australia and Britain especially), History, Demography, Literary and Cultural studies and Tourism. The topics of this book range from Australians in Britain (especially London), including artists, literary intellectuals, students, women, tourists and travellers, servicemen, nurses, teachers and journalists, global professionals; the changing community; demographic trends; migration; links between the two countries; Australian newspapers in London; and Australia in the 'British world'.' 1 Anglo-Australian Attitudes : Remembering and Re-reading Russel Ward Carl Bridge , 2008 single work criticism
— Appears in: Journal of Australian Colonial History , vol. 10 no. 2 2008; (p. 187-200)

'Despite all of this amendment, elaboration and attempted refutation, Russel Ward's book remains the supreme evocation and interpretation of its subject. Like a great whale savaged by sharks, the Legend swims on, accumulating scars, bits falling off here and there, occasionally changing its course a little, but seemingly immortal. Here, I wish to explore, in particular, two aspects of the Legend. First, its connection with Russel Ward's own personal background and life. And, secondly, its intimate, though often only assumed rather than stated, and now very unfashionable, connection with Britishness in its Anglo-Australian form.'
