BiographyHistory

In 1959 Ruth Bayne and Australian Pat Hilton travelled from England to Australia overland through France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India to Calcutta on a Lambretta 125cc motor scooter. They continued by sea to Ceylon and Singapore, and to Sydney by plane. Ruth Bayne settled in Australia working as a nurse in Beechworth, Melbourne and Pambula until Multiple sclerosis forced her retirement. She formed the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group and wrote about her experiences with the illness in Me and My Shadow (1997). Bayne was a member of the Far South Coast Fellowship of Australian Writers.
