In 2012, Wood became the first Australian to win a Bram Stoker Award, offered by the Horror Writers Association. Wood won for 'superior achievement in non-fiction' for his book Stephen King: A Literary Companion.

Wood's first graphic novel, Horrors! Great Stories of Fear and their Creators, illustrated by American artist Glenn Chadbourne, was published in 2010. It was followed by a second graphic novel, Witch Hunts: A Graphic History of the Burning Times in 2012.
