Ann Edwards, nee Flanders, was born at Bowraville racecourse, where an Aboriginal Fringe Camp was established before the land was used for a racecourse. It was sometimes called Grassy Road. Her mother was Brenda Doreen Kelly and her father was Hubert Donald Flanders.

Flanders-Edwards carries on the Aboriginal traditions she was taught by her Elders. When her children and nieces have babies, Flanders-Edwards takes the afterbirth from Macksville Hospital to bury at the racecourse, much to the shock of staff at the hospital. This cultural practice was handed down to her from her Aunt Stella who was a healing woman.
