BiographyHistory

John Murtagh Macrossan was a newspaper proprietor, miner and politician.

Born in Ireland, Macrossan emigrated to Australia in 1853. In 1873 he started The Northern Advocate and Miners' Journal in Charters Towers. Macrossan won the seat of Kennedy in 1873 and represented Townsville from 1879 until his death in 1891. In 1890 he became leader of the Separation Party in the Brisbane Parliament.
