Marie Reay studied at the Australian National University (ANU), and was a published anthropologist who worked with indigenous peoples in Australia and the Papua New Guinea Highlands. In the 1940s, she became the first anthropologist to study contemporary conditions among Aborigines in Northern NSW, and in 1953, the first woman anthropologist to work in the Highlands. While there, the journalist Colin Simpson encountered her, and subsequently featured her in his travelogue, Adam in Plumes (1954). She later returned to ANU where she spent the remainder of her career.
