Darren Injie's mother is a Yinhawangka woman and his father is a whitefella. Darren was born in Fremantle hospital because the cyclone in 1967 had destroyed the Onslow hospital. He lived with his grandparents until he was six years old and then with his mother but returned to his grandparents' care by choice. His grandmother is
Joyce Injie (q.v.). Injie attended Onslow Primary School and later went to John Forrest High School in Perth, living at the Kuta Kutu Hostel in Mt Lawley. Injie completed a bridging course at what later became Curtin University, and then enrolled at Edith Cowan University where he completed two years before returning home to the Pilbara. He began work with the Department of Community Development (DCD) as a District Officer and then as a deckhand on trawlers in Port Hedland and Darwin. He is a strong believer in Aboriginal culture and is interested in developing tourism opportunities for the Karijini Aboriginal Corporation.
