BiographyHistory

Lara Damiani is a second generation Italian. Her mother came to Australia after the Second World War with her family (mother and father, six brothers and sisters) when she was twelve. Lara's father settled in South Australia (SA) when he was about 21. He has been heavily involved in the Italian community since the 1970s when he started the first Italian radio program on 5UV. He has also run an Italian radio program on 92.7 FM and has been an actor and a writer of poetry in Italian.

Lara Damiani was the middle child of three. She was educated at Mary McKillop College, matriculating in 1985. She gained a Technical And Further Education (TAFE) Certificate in Office Practice in 1988. She worked for the South Australia Fishing Industry Training Council 1989-94, becoming in 1992 at the age of 23 the youngest female Executive Officer of any national fishing industry organization in Australia. In 1994 she was appointed Manager of the SA Fishing and Seafood Industry Skills Centre Inc. She won a Department of Education, Employment and Training (DEET) Career Achievement Award in 1994 for Outstanding Achievement and in 1995 was a finalist in the Young Australian of the Year Award (Tubemakers and Metaland Regional Development Award). She was overseas for a period in 1997 and on her return worked as Public Relations Officer at the Australian Fisheries Academy, and editor of their newsletter, In Depth. She has been a regular columnist for Seafood Australia since 1994 and has regularly contributed to a range of industry magazines and newsletters.

Lara believes that her home environment, which was dominated by religion and family, and especially family, has influenced her tremendously as a writer, and these are themes she explores in her books. In 1998 she worked on a film script (begun in New Zealand) for a new Australian film. She had written two novels (yet to be published) and was working on her third. In 1999 she reported that she had set up and was operating her own company, Lara Damiani and Associates Pty Ltd, providing specialized Public Relations and Event Management services to the commercial fishing and seafood industry. Damiani was commissioned to write the history of the Australian tuna industry and has also published poetry in anthology.
