Michael Dinkum was born on Newry Station and his skin group is Djulama. Dinkum's parents were of the Miriwung people and they both died when he was one month old. Daisy and Jeff Dinggul raised Dinkum like their own son. Dinkum lived on Newry Station until he was sent to a convent school at about three years of age. Dinkum contracted leprosy at the age of fourteen and spent much time in hospital.
