Jean Taylor obtained a BA from La Trobe University. She has worked in a range of occupations including nursing, waitressing, working in a women's refuge and driving a tram. After spending some time travelling overseas, she returned to live and work in Melbourne.

Once married and with two grown-up children, Taylor is a radical lesbian feminist who has written a number of books and plays, many published under the pseudonym Emily George and self-published with Dykebooks.

In the 1990s Taylor became involved with the Women's Circus, a Melbourne-based circus performance group. She has written about this experience in Women's Circus : Leaping off the Edge.
