Kay was one of the founders (with Peter Finch (q.v.) and others) of the Mercury Theatre in 1946. He had been a member of the musical group 'Weintraub Syncopators' who toured the world. While in Australia, the Second World War broke out and he was interned as an enemy alien. On his release he decided to stay in Australia and began to work in radio, film and theatre.
