Blind Alec Jupurrula was a young boy living near Brooks Soak (Northern Territory) when a dingo hunter named Brooks was killed for not returning an Aboriginal man's wife. When Brook's body was discovered it was the catalyst for the Coniston Massacre, "... the last official 'punitive expeditions' mounted against the ... [Indigenous Australians] ... in the Northern Territory" (Read, P. & Read, J (eds.), Long Time, Olden Time: Aboriginal Accounts of Northern Territory History, p. 33).

To avoid being murdered by the police, Jupurrula and his family escaped in different directions. Jupurrula fled to Wave Hill Station with his Aunt.
