Farmer, milkman, publican and sometime poet, Jim Preston grew up in Gippsland, Victoria. Aside from brief periods spent in New Zealand and the Warrnambooll region of Victoria, Preston spent most of his life in Tasmania. He ran the Bay View Hotel in Strahan before returning to farming on the North West Coast.
