BiographyHistory

'Ilura Press is an independent publishing house established in Melbourne, Australia, with the aim of providing an avenue for creative writers whose work deserves a receptive and willing audience.

The emblem of Ilura Press, part hand drawing and part computer graphic, is based on Cycladic artifacts dating as far back as 2700 BC. They have come to represent not only the spirit of that time and region, but the very beginning of Western Art. The spirit that exists within these, often very small, marble sculptures has been a source of fascination. The simplicity of the works, and their ability to convey a unique aspect of humanity, directly inspired artists such as Modigliani and Picasso.

And they have come to inspire us as writers. The female figure with folded arms represents the source of creative energy every writer and artist taps into.

As for the name, our Cycladic mascot received "Ilura" from a mixture of ancient Greek combined with a Hindu moon goddess and general concepts of re-birth and cycles. There is a local North Italian dialect in which Ilura is a colloquial word meaning "at that moment" or "what now?" Our answer to "What now?" is Ilura Press!'
