An independent press specialising in horror and dark speculative fiction, Brimstone Press was founded in Western Australia in 2004 by Angela Challis and Shane Jiraiya Cummings. It has since become a leading publisher of dark fiction (horror, dark fantasy, and paranormal fiction). Brimstone has also established a strong track record of publishing short fiction through Shadowed Realms, Australia's professional dark fiction online magazine.

In 2005, Brimstone expanded into non-fiction with the publication of HorrorScope, an award-winning online news and review zine (HorrorScope has since become the official news source for the Australian Horror Writers Association). The following year Brimstone released the first of its nationally distributed mass-market book titles - Book of Shadows Volume 1 and Australian Dark Fantasy and Horror 2006.Since then it has continued to produce mass-market collections and anthologies, as well as limited edition, experimental publications such as Shadow Box and Black Box.

2008 saw Brimstone begin publishing Black: Australian Dark Culture Magazine. Although distributed nationally through newsagents the magazine went into a hiatus in 2009 so as to be transformed into an e-magazine. A free e-zine, Eye of Fire, was subsequently made available as means of filling the void until the online return of Black.

Brimstone Press' projects and published fiction have won, or been nominated for, every major genre award in Australia including the Ditmar Award, the Aurealis Award, and the Australian Shadows Award.

In early 2012 Brimstone headquarters moved to Wellington, New Zealand following the editors' relocation across the Tasman.
