Maskell has been a freelance writer/journalist since 1982. He has also taught Professional Writing at TAFE and CAE levels since 1993. With fellow freelancer Gina Perry he co-wrote Write to Publish (1999). In 2005 Maskell was mainly writing for Environment Victoria and occasional pieces in the Age. Maskell has lived in Melbourne for many years with his family.
