BiographyHistory

Laurie Baymarrwaŋa, affectionately known as 'Big Boss', was born on Murrungga Island, largest of the outer Crocodile Islands of North-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. She was a senior Yolŋu leader, and known for her language conservation work for the Yannhaŋju language.

Baymarrwaŋa started a mapping and Atlas project for the Crocodile Islands, which was released in 2014: Yan-nhangu Atlas and Illustrated Dictionary of the Crocodile Islands.

Baymarrwaŋa was awarded Senior Australian of the Year in 2012. 

In 2019, Laurie featured on the AIATSIS International Women's Day poster 'More Powerful Together'.
