BiographyHistory

The Rev'd H. J. D'Emden arrived in Tasmania as a Congregational minister under an appointment with the Colonial Missionary Society. In 1855, he became the parliamentary reporter for the Hobart Mercury and, later that same year, became proprietor and editor of the Colonial Times. During May, June and July 1857, D'Ebden appeared on several occasions before the Insolvent Court. His debts were over £5,000 and his assets estimated at about £1,500. On 9 July 1857, D'Ebden was taken into custody and imprisoned for nine months.

D'Ebden practised as a barrister from 1858 to 1872, and he was also an artist and dramatist.
