  • Advocating for Australian Playwrights

Despite its grounding in British theatrical traditions, Australian drama was not overlooked by the Twelfth Night Theatre (Healy 105). The encouragement and support of Australian playwriting and productions was a common ideal in the major Australian theatre societies at this time (Comans 183). So, in a not unusual trend in little theatre companies, Twelfth Night took a keen interest in promoting and advocating for local drama. It particularly took interest in Eunice Hanger's work, producing many of her plays from 1948 onward. It also presented drama concerned with contemporary political and social issues (Healy 104). It had a reputation for being “always slightly rebellious,” consistently including in its repertoire, plays containing some social commentary (Healy 104). For example, in the late 1930s, some plays reflected on the poverty and unemployment of the depression years (Healy 104).
