1 Billy From the Blue Gums Jane M. King , Frank Sheppard , 1918 single work drama humour

Advertised as the 'first production on any stage of an entirely new and original Australian comedy drama' (Toowoomba Chronicle 13 Apr. 1918,p. 6), the story concerns Billy, an orphan who has been brought up in the bush. Neglected and allowed to run wild she appears rough and fearless but beneath this exterior she has a tender and sympathetic heart, clearly noticeable though her relationship with her puppy, Skeeter. When Peter Crawford, a Sydney solicitor visits the area he becomes aware of Billy and determined to give her a chance in life arranges for her to live with his aunt. Upon her arrival in the city Billy shocks the aunt with her uncouth manners and language. These rough edges are eventually smoothed over, however, and she is sent to a ladies college to be schooled. Billy later marries her guardian but although he is kind and devoted to her he nevertheless leaves her to her own devices. This leads to her becoming a spendthrift and gambler. On the verge of wrecking her life Billy realises that her love for her husband must come foremost and the story ends happily for all
