"In a personal narrative which supplement the author's earlier work, England's Exiles (1842), on the subject of the treatment and instruction of convicts during transportation, Browning describes his voyage as surgeon and superintendent of convicts on the transport Earl Grey from Plymouth to Hobart Town in 1842-3. Browning's main interest was the instruction of the convicts in the Scriptures and their conversion to Christianity. He reports many instances of religious awakening, some prompted by a spectacular electrical storm at sea, and includes transcripts of confessions, expressions of repentance and professions of faith, which he claims were made to him by convicts" (Walsh and Hooton 28).
