AbstractHistoryArchive Description
'The subject of this work is the author’s maternal great grandmother. Born in 1872, in St Just, Cornwall, Ethel emigrated to Australia at the age of fifteen. Beginning married life in a one-room tin shack outside Mildura, she published articles and her own collection of short stories, moving house frequently and raising six children along the way. These poems are compact and precise micro-portraits in verse. With characteristic adherence to formal, almost claustrophobic strictures set against an animate sense of buoyancy and breath, Albiston explores the tension between high poetic artifice and the small moments of an ordinary life.' Experiments in Poetic Biography : Feminist Threads in Contemporary Long Form Poetry
2016
single work
criticism
— Appears in: Biography , Winter vol. 39 no. 1 2016; (p. 1-22) 'This essay examines long poems by contemporary women poets that represent examples of 'poetic biography,' to consider the diversity of ways in which feminist poets are writing/documenting the lives of historical figures. I am chiefly concerned with investigating the potential for poetry to expand the field of biographical writing in relation to the female historical voice (as both the writer and the written).' Beyond Facts and Accuracies : Long Form Poetry as Biographical Method
2014
single work
criticism
— Appears in: Axon : Creative Explorations , December vol. 4 no. 2 2014; 'This paper addresses long form poetry as non-fiction medium—specifically as biographical medium—discussing examples by writers such as Jordie Albiston, Susan Howe and Lyn Hejinian, to consider the diversity of ways in which poets are writing/documenting the lives of historical figures. My aim is to demonstrate how poetic biographies can extend our representations of these characters into new dimensions, using poetic play—the line, metaphor, frisson, juxtaposition, space and rhythm—to convey aspects of character and experience in innovative and exciting ways. I propose an extension of non-fiction writing into the poetic form as a way towards addressing historical inaccuracies and aporias, thus not only opening a space for the representation of marginal voices, but offering new frameworks for life writing.'
