Notes

  • Author's note: everyone's little sister: La Nina, from the Spanish, "girl child": a weather phenomenon caused by the cooling of the waters in the Equatorial Pacific, and associated with heavy rain and flooding on land.
  • Author's note: Sacra conversazione: a tableau in Renaissance art, often an altar-piece, depicting an informal grouping of saints, often also the Virgin and child, in the company of the members of the family (often noble) who commissioned the work.
  • Author's note: Love procession: I had in mind Corteo d'amore, a painting, probably by Marco Bueno, made in tempera on board around 1440. The meaning of the painting is a mystery, but I was struck by its calm and luscious depiction of a procession of orderly, handsome figures, male and female – possibly slave, or dedicatees, of love – led by a young female figure with golden hair. I'd seen the image at a travelling exhibition of Renaissance art at the National Gallery of Australia.
