AbstractHistoryArchive Description

An American anthology television series, sometimes credited with launching the television writing careers of American writers such as Gore Vidal, and of Australian writer Sumner Locke Elliott.

The Philco Television Playhouse shared a timeslot with the Goodyear Television Playhouse after Goodyear started sharing sponsorship of the existing Philco program in 1951.

The separation between the two is largely cosmetic, but for purposes of classification, the serials that ran under each banner are usually listed separately.

Notes

  • The show was sponsored initially by Philco and, from 1951, by Philco and Goodyear, hence the fluctuations in title.

A musical Ruritanian romance.

In the New York Times, the piece is described as 'a play about the exiled king of a mythical country who comes to America and finds romance' (8 June 1955, p.59). Later, the New York Times expanded on this to describe him as 'a deposed king of a frantic country called Brandovia where the inhabitants spent their time exporting bologna and fighting off assaults by their aggressive neighbors, the Carps and the Gloats' (23 August 1955, p.49).
