Thomas Daniel was ‘one of the oldest printers in the colony’ of New South Wales. He was probably an overseer for a time at the Sydney Morning Herald and had a jobbing office in York Street, Sydney. Daniel subsequently moved to Adelong to take up mining, but ‘meeting with little success’ came to Goulburn where he was the overseer of the Goulburn Herald office for about a decade. In 1870, with George Gray [Grey?], Daniel established the Goulburn Evening Penny Post, and Southern Counties General Advertiser. He later became sole proprietor and continued to run the newspaper through its various name changes. (The paper eventually became the Goulburn Evening Penny Post in 1881.)

Daniel suffered from bronchitis and, at the time of his death, was in Sydney ‘to escape the severity of the Goulburn climate’.
