Devoted family man Anthonio Riccardi poses as a collector of rare stamps, but supports his wife and musically talented younger brother by hiring out his skills as an assassin.

Rienits's film began as a television drama produced by the BBC in 1950. After it aired, Anglo-Amalgamated Films approached Rienits with a view to re-filming it and releasing it as a feature film: it was released in cinemas in 1951. Both versions were called Assassin for Hire, and both cast the same actor in the lead role of Antonio Riccardi.

In 1952, Rienits published a novelisation of his script, in an edition with a short story based on his film Wide Boy.
