AbstractHistoryArchive Description
'A well-researched and detailed account of the AHS Manunda, Clara, and their joint activities through WWII. Her appointment to the Manunda in 1940, its role in the Middle East, the voyage to Australia, the bombing of Darwin, photographs of some of the ships in Darwin Harbour in February 1942, work in New Guinea and the Coral Sea and the evacuation of wounded servicemen are all extremely well covered. There are extensive lists of staff, nursing, merchant seamen, army and naval, a list of Manunda personnel killed in the Darwin bombing, and the book is also illustrated with many quotes from others’ diaries, both official and personal, and letters home, making events come alive. The book would be a valuable resource to anyone with an interest in the history of Australia, the Second World War, nursing, or the Armed Forces. ' (Publication summary)
