19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
W.H. Leigh Esquire was a surgeon of the Australian Company's Ship South Australian. In Reconnoitering Voyages and Travels, he chronicled his global journey over the years 1836 to 1838, stating in the preface that he hoped this work would help those considering emigration to Australia. After travelling from Plymouth via the Cape of Good Hope, Leigh spent time on Kangaroo Island, as well as in Adelaide and Sydney and described Aboriginal peoples, flora and fauna, landscape, as well as the price of commodities in the cities. Leigh continued his journey, travelling on from Sydney to Calcutta.
