Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Archibald Sutter (1829-1893), was an inspector for H.M. Land Office, and member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. In Per Mare, Per Terras he detailed his journey to New Zealand via Australia. On his global tour, Sutter travelled from London through Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, and the Americas. Although the majority of his account was concerned with New Zealand, Sutter provided a description of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Sutter's focus was the character of the colonists, as well as an interpretation of the offensive label "new chum" for recently arrived emigrants.
