Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Written retrospectively, Charles Stretton's (1811-1878) lengthy Memoirs of a Chequered Life is divided into three volumes. The first dealt with his life prior to his journey to Australia. In Australia, Stretton provided a detailed account of his life, including melodramatic anecdotes of adventure, murders, excessive drinking, gold digging, comic scenes, fraud, and general dissolution within the colony of Victoria.
