AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'The true richness of the literature of the 1890s, especially its social and political aspects, has been obscured by the important critical approaches so far.

'The New Criticism that has been dominant in university practice since World War II has elevated metaphysical above social and political themes,in Australia partly in response to a radical nationalist literary historiography which overemphasised a certain historical temper and particular social values as central, and which diverted cultural analysis into a narrow search for national distinctiveness.' (Paragraph one and two of Abstract)
