  • Fiona Foley is a Badtjala woman, an artist and an academic. She is a Lecturer at Queensland College of Art and her book Biting the Clouds: A Badtjala perspective on The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act, 1897 will be published by UQ Press in October 2020.

  • Explore Fiona Foley’s K’gari: her Badtjala connections to this place, her artwork and a short history of the Bogimbah mission, established on K’gari under The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act, 1897. This site includes a video in which Fiona Foley welcomes viewers to K’gari, a selection of work from her Horror Has A Face series (2017) and introduces her film Out of the Sea Like Cloud (2019). It also includes a timeline which traces the known history of K’gari.

This BlackWords project emerged from Louise Martin-Chew’s Graduate Digital Research Fellowship at the University of Queensland (2019) and extends content developed for her PhD, a biography of Fiona Foley titled Fiona Foley Provocateur: An Art Life (2019) which will be published by QUT Art Museum in 2021.
