BiographyHistory

Fitzgerald was a writer and historian of Chinese culture. He was invited to Australia in the late 1940s by Professor Sir Douglas Copland (Minister to China, and Vice Chancellor of Australian National University). Fitzgerald then became a reader (1950-1951) and then, professor of Far Eastern history from 1954-1967, at ANU.

Fitzgerald was a founding fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, in 1969, and conferred a 'doctorate of letters' from ANU in 1968. During retirement he completed an autobiography Why China? in 1985, which has since been translated into Chinese as part of a Ten-Volume Translation of Australian Literature (李尧译文集 ).
