History
The REAL Awards operates as a shortlist for multiple children's choice awards, including KOALA, YABBA, and KROC. It also served as a shortlist for the now-defunct COOL (ACT) awards. REAL only provides shortlistings: the winners are state and territory based, and differ among the three awards who draw from this shortlist.
Combining nominations and a shared shortlist under REAL began in 2001-2002, with KOALA and YABBA. COOL joined in 2003, and KROC later.
The REAL Awards contain four categories: Picture Story Books; Fiction for Younger Readers; Fiction for Older Readers; and Fiction for Years 7-9.
