'The easy way is the conventional way — going with the crowd instead of elbowing one's way against it. The man, with an original mind, who opposes either the convictions or the conventions of the community, is ostracised, or worse. So Mr. Rowlands, the little schoolmaster, found, when he tried to teach children to think for themselves. This dangerous policy involved him in a sea of troubles, and taught him that the way of social transgressors is hard. This is the idea that forms the theme of one of the short plays of Catherine Shepherd, the Tasmanian author, which is to be produced on the A.B.C. stage next Thursday night (January 5)'.
