Editor's note: This book depicts situations and characters that are reflective of the year 1890, and principally, the institutions, laws and social customs of some groups of people living in Australia at that time. The writers, editors and publisher are all well aware that certain language, attitudes and even laws would be completely unacceptable if they prevailed today, yet if those events are not included in the narratives herein the content would fail to convince of its period setting. Readers are asked to please take this into consideration; as, in some cases, the very things that will offend our sensibilities now are specifically the issues this book wishes to emphasise were scenarios that were, sadly, typical, and commonplace at a time over a century past.
