Hopetoun is located about 400 kms north-west of Melbourne. The "Hopetoun Courier and Mallee Pioneer", an independent newspaper governed by a local board, is published on Thursdays and circulates in the southern Mallee and the Shire of Yarriambiack.

Editions of the "Hopetoun Courier and Mallee Pioneer" are kept at the Hopetoun Historical Society, while the CD-ROM is at the newspaper’s offices. The State Library of Victoria and the National Library of Australia also have copies of the paper.
