Content Summary

  • About 12,000 comic books and papers and story papers for children and young people mostly published in Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand and North America, loose or in volumes (original annuals, re-published collections or bound by the archive holder)

Australian and New Zealand material includes:

  • "The Silver Jacket", all issues, 1953-1956
  • "Australian Boy", about half of the issues published, 1952-1955
  • "The Phantom", most Australian issues, 1948-present
  • "Junior Digest", most issues, 1946-1965
  • "Eagle", Australian edition, 1953-1955
  • Sunday comic supplements, mostly "Sun Herald", "Sunday Telegraph" and "Canberra Times", broken runs, 1960-present


Ray Edmondson (OAM) runs a consultancy offering advice and services on audiovisual archiving. He was inaugural Deputy Director of the National Film and Sound Archive and publishes extensively on many aspects of archiving in Australia and overseas. There is an oral history of Ray Edmondson at the National Library of Australia.

Much of the collection is kept in off-site storage.
