Weekly Report - Week 7, 16 June 2000
What I've done
- Attempted a way of organising people/pseudonyms/names. In the light
of some of the work done by
INDECS, we may add 'pseudo-person' between a person and
a pseudonym-name in case we want to be able to ascribe
person like qualities (birth date, gender, relationships, blood-group,
further pseudonyms ...) to the pseud!
- XML Europe 2000 this week included 15 presentations on
Topic Maps! Wow! Maybe this stuff is for real!
- Begun defining non-core
topics and relationships. This is a big
job, but bits are falling into place.
- Lots of email discussions with MLA, AM, KK
- Judith Pearce alerted us to the INDECS work, and also
the IFLA FRBR (warning - 144
pages of PDF)
and Harmony Project.
These are all extremely relevant, and I'll assimilate ASAP!
- Investigated low-end Topic Map -like visualisation
implemented by Lucid Fried Eggs
example: www.memes.net.
What I haven't done but need to do soon!
- Start thinking about data maintenance user interface
requirements.
Next week
- Continue define the "topics" we want to record, organise them
in hierarchies and define relationships with major
entities
-
Continue discussions on and refinement of the data model.
Hopefully update all documents with amendments arising
from email and meetings.
- Probably in late (10-11?) Monday
-
Start thinking about data maintenance user interface
requirements.
Summary
-
Well, didnt finish the data model first cut, as hoped
(but I forgot it was a short week with a public holiday,
but something tells me I was more than 1 day out..).
On the other hand, the level of feedback and research
into related directions (particularly Judith Pearce's
references) was well worth while.
Hope to definately complete the first cut of the
data model this week!
