Weekly Report - Week 7, 15 June 2001
What I've done
- Dataloading
- SA Women Bib - matched names, loaded new main names, loaded bio and contact
notes (the latter to the Maintenance note - these aren't formatted as beautifully
as they were in Anne's database, but maybe they will do?). The automated process
matched most of the main names, leaving about 300 for manual matching or designation
as "new", which I've done. Matching of other names and pseuds is a manual process
(due to the perils of automated processing), which I'm about 25% the way through
(done 81 of 324 agents needing examination, with about 50% so far needing manual
tweaking or addition of names or pseuds).
Nothing more has been done with the manual processing of the subjects for
the Australian Responses to Asia bib.
- Miscellaneous queries and adhoc data analysis reports
- Design - spent about a day discussing UI design with Marie-Louise and Annette.
Agents have been covered, but we need to talk more about works.
- System
- Installed the latest version of our XSLT processor,
Xalan version 2.1.0 on
the new machine (not yet in the production environment). After tuning
and caching of stylesheets, this is running slightly faster than the
old version. All new development on Xalan is focussed on version 2, and
it has a "standard" program interface, so this was a required move.
- Configured Tomcat 3.2 to run under Apache
on the test environment.
- Attempted to upgrade Oracle 8.1.6 to 8.1.7 to rectify problems we are having
backing up the database. This has been a disaster, wasting almost an entire
day for no reward. The migration of the database has failed twice, so we
are rethinking our options - possibly recreate the database under 8.1.7 rather
than migrate. This is happening on the test machine so is not effecting
the production system.
- The Sun engineer cancelled his attempt to fix the boot problems with the
test machine and has rescheduled for Monday 18 June
Next Week
- Finalise configuring and loading the new machine.
- Move the documentation web to the new machine.
- To Do list. Work through the (mostly) minor issues on the to-do
list provided by Annette/Kerry/Marie-Louise.
- Finalise SA Women Writers Bib load - rest of agent data (dates, etc) plus
the actual bib data!
- More time on planning session on the new user interface with Marie-Louise
and Annette.
- Some reports for Kerry and Annette on works without meaningfull
type/form/genre classification - these came from BAL/AMLC/WABIB
with designations such as "fiction" or "sundry", and we need
to work out how best to tackle their classification.
Next few weeks
- First known dates.
- The new thesaurus is expected to be available for loading soon.
- Pick up the ball I dropped regarding the Z39.50 interface to NLA
holdings.
