AustLit
Weekly Report - Week 43 and 44, 15 March 2002
What I've done
- There was no weekly report produced for Week 43 as I've had nearly 4 days off
in the last fortnight and not achieved a great deal!
- The database was changed to support the scope relationships. Unfortunately,
just creating a new index on the topicRelationships table threw the
query optimizer into a tiz, and the system ran very slowly for about
40 minutes whilst the old index being replaced was dropped and
statistics were computed for the new index.
- Ongoing discussions about public access. Some minor changes
have been made, but the full implementation will be completed
next week.
- Added a function show current-year works added in the last
fortnight. The count of all new works is now shown on the home
page with a link to a "recent additions"
page which lists works by date in two columns depending on work type.
- I've prepared two papers about the AustLit Technical development
to be submitted for consideration to the
AusWeb02 conference:
- Schema Driven User Interface Generation - Building Advanced
Web-based Interfaces using presentation schema, XML, the DOM and background HTTP connections
- Taking RDF and Topic Maps seriously - what happens when you drink the Kool Aid
- Misc and many minor changes to stylesheets and other formatting following maintainer and
user feedback (Mass change to books published by "Mills and Boon" to add form='novel'
and genre='romance' if no existing form or genre; various agent stats for Kerry;
several changes to tagged formatting suggested by John East, UQ; investigation
of client-access problems involving IP addresses; fixed problem with user statistics
which was causing an access problem for the UC; new stylesheet to show customer
list in a convenient format for Kerry/Annette; F-K agents with creative works list for Kerry;
render "Visitor" status even if agent has no nationalities; discussion about moving
Heritage topics to a hierarchy; add new form: "painting"; change stylesheets to
not show book icon next to paintings;)
- The system was stable (the less I'm here, the more stable it is...)
Next Week
- Continue design/implementation of relationship scopes. The first
use for this facility will be year-scoping of award-as-subject
relationships.
- Finalise "public view" processing.
Next few weeks
- Move awards to be event-based rather than work-based.
- Multiple creation events for a work as a mechanism for allowing date ranges
to be associated with agents responsible for works, eg editors of a periodical.
- Refining NBD Holdings searches.
- Review all subset definitions for efficacy.
- Import/export in MARC and DC formats.
- SDI facility.
- Combining searches
