Notes last updated: 2 May 2000 [ These are just random notes, questions, observations, musings that have come to me today. Please vigourously disabuse me of absurd notions before they become ingrained!] * Linking to "parent" record Linking a review to a novel, etc - how is this represented in the marc tag space? "Source", not really... I guess it is a link to an internal record number which has no meaning outside ALEG, but still, it might be nice when generating a marc record to be able to confidently put the title of the parent record somewhere. * Review of a short story, part of an anthology What about a review of a short story which is part of an anthology - surely the review "parent" points to the short story, not the anthology (especially as the short story may be published in several anthologies, or 'stand alone' in a magazine..) Can reviews themselves become part of an anthology? (Eg, "Collected reviews of Canberra Times Journos") * We need an Origin field Defines where this record came from - eg, BAL, AUSTLIT... Maybe this defines some editing/revision protocol? * We need a Status field Maybe it will be handy to have a "in-progress" and/or "under review" status which will identify records that should not be shown to the public? Can this flag only be applied to "new" records? If so, how would you flag pending issues in existing records which require updating? * Notes field "Earliest known date" - this is so common, and specific maybe it should be removed from the anonymity/generality of "Notes" and be a specifically identified field, displayed to the user with a specific heading? * Work flow issues Related to the status field, maybe there is a requirement for: - indexers to be able to add non-public comments on records (pending issues, pending corrections) - indexers/other staff to be able to search for these (eg, all new comments entered by X in the last n days), or new records (all new and edited records updated by X in the last n days) - add multiple comments, respond to comments (maybe link to email?) - keep revision/change history (what was changed, who changed it, when it was changed, what comments were added) * Global search/replace Mainly for thesaurus terms? Eg, change all "Ship Building" to "Boat Building"... * Holdings Return info in "ALEG" style page - ie, regardless of whether sourced from ADFA, Kinetica, Monash, the holdings info would look the same. But is there any need to consult any source other than Kinetica for holdings? Ever? (Annette mentioned the desirability of showing users local holdings first - eg, for a Monash searcher, holdings at Monash libraries, followed by holdings at other Victorian libraries, followed by rest of Australia. Also, it would be handy to decode the library codes into a name understandable by lay users.) How to search accurately Kinetica for holdings? Title + author? All editions? ... How to interact with Kinetica to get holdings? - Z39.50? - web screen scraping? - custom protocol? * RAAM How to execute search on RAAM? Just on creator name? or Creator name and title words using the RAAM "All indexed words" option (eg, 'Boldrewood Robbery Under Arms' - seems to work!) Maybe need an "expert" option which just drops the user into RAAMS * SETIS and full text Do we just search for title words (eg 'Robbery under arms') on http://setis.library.usyd.edu.au/pubotbin/ot2www-ozlit2?specfile=/usr/ot/www/ozlit/ozlitbin/ozlit.o2w It isn't clear to me how we get easily (automatically) to the full text: http://setis.library.usyd.edu.au/pubotbin/ot2www-ozlit2?specfile=/usr/ot/www/ozlit/ozlitbin/ozlit.o2w&act=text&offset=2202337&textreg=2&query=robbery+under+arms What about other full text sites, such as Project Gutenburg? http://promo.net/cgi-promo/pg/t9.cgi?entry=1198&full=yes&ftpsite=ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/ ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext98/robry10.txt * Indexing Aim - to make entry of the indexing process as fast, simple and accurate as possible Some possible approaches: - templates based on type of material (review template, novel template, etc) - Enumerate common "notes" options in a dropdown for selection and replacement of boilerplate section (common options are listed in the "Guide for AUSTLIT Indexers" section 2.15 pages 71 - 72.) - make it easy to select and assign to a work: - terms from thesaurus and previously used non-thesaurus terms - source, author, ... (what else?) - for reviews/criticism, the work(s) being discussed For collections/anthologies, the ability to remember the last source used and easily recall it would be very handy because items within a collection/anthology tend to be indexed together. - "easy to select" - how physically to do this? What about a separate, movable resizable, scrollable window which can contain one or more authority lists (multiple windows each with a separate list, or one window with multiple lists, or a combination?) which allows items to be selected and "drag and dropped" to the work being indexed (eg, display Thesaurus in all its hierachical narrow/broader/related/ glory, select a term and drag it to the current work-sheet)? Or a popup window which pops up on demand rather than is open all the time? Or both? -------------------------------
