The Australian Literature Resource
The Reading in the Victorian Classroom subset was established in 2007. It provides information on the Victorian Readers, a series of school readers produced between 1927 and 1930 for schoolchildren in Victoria and used (with revisions) until the 1950s. The Victorian Readers are similar to other state-based school readers developed during this period (such as the Adelaide Readers, the Queensland Readers and the Tasmanian Readers), and offer a rich resource for studying how these texts promoted values and social practices to Victorian children. The subset also indexes issues of the Victorian School Paper produced between 1928-1930, and 1940, thus offering a record of institutional texts provided to children in Victoria during this time.
Deakin University takes responsibility for the development of this subset, under the direction of Professor Clare Bradford, of the School of Communication and Creative Arts, and Ms Anne Horn, University Librarian, Deakin University. The subset draws on Deakin's Australian Schools Textbook Collection at the Geelong Waterfront Campus and Melbourne Campus at Burwood , and on the Children's Literature Collection of the State Library of Victoria.
